A U.S. Air Force B-52 Stratofortress crashed shortly after takeoff from Edwards Air Force Base in California on Monday.
In a brief statement, base officials said the strategic bomber aircraft crashed at 11:20 a.m. PST.
Emergency crews have responded to the scene, and the “situation is ongoing,” officials said.
It was not immediately clear if anyone on board the aircraft or on the ground was injured. Edwards Air Force Base did not say how many people were on board at the time of the crash.
The airfield at the base is closed for the time being, and all inbound aircraft are being diverted.
Additionally, all “non-commercial visitor passes” for Edwards have been suspended until further notice to allow the installation to focus entirely on emergency response operations, officials said.
Footage of the crash site captured via helicopter by KTTV showed a long stretch of burnt ground with no recognizable parts of the aircraft intact.
